MOVIE REVIEW

MENJUAL PESONA OBAMA

(Salinan Kompas, Minggu, 3 Februari 2013)

(ROW)

OBAMA'S CHARM

(Kompas, Sunday, 3 February 2013)

Barack Obama is not only appealing because he is the first African-American to become the president of the United States. For the people of Indonesia, he is also appealing because he has spent his childhood in Indonesia.

After working on the movie Little Obama, director and screenwriter Damien Dematra develops the power of Obama’s dream and manifest it into a film called Dream Obama. Start showing in cinemas since 24 January, the movie is trying to use the momentum of the positive sentiment towards the president.

Hendra (Pong Hardjatmo) undergoes beautiful days with her granddaughter, Margareth (Natasha Dematra), by sharing the power of dream. Hendra has always pointed Obama as a man who dares making a history for the U.S, and he urges Margareth to dream as high as she could. Having inspired, Margareth’s starts dreaming to become an orator to inspire people.

A car accident makes Hendra and Margareth seriously injured. Margareth who recovers first loss her vision and all her dreams shatter. Accompanied by his mother, Maryam (Ayu Azhari), she tries to hold on and finally enliven her dream.

The movie has a simple plot, making the leap of logic in this 83 minutes movie easy to chew. Maybe it is what way Damien plan to do—avoiding a complicated story. Natasha plays well considering the movie is produced in 9 days 17 hours, and 45 minutes. Although other casts look as if they are merely playing a movie, the story of Margareth could make people shed tears watching it. (ROW)
